Why We Started
My mum retired at 65, and her biggest fear was falling. It was a fear shaped by experience – in her old age, my grandmother fell and broke her hip. Her health declined quickly after that, and she passed away a year and a half later.
Worried about my mum’s health, I started searching for training programmes that could help her. What I found were options that were either too vigorous, high-impact, or risky. None focused on what she needed most: lower-body strength and balance.
I began looking for a safer, more effective approach and sought advice from physiotherapists and geriatricians. One insight came up repeatedly: Chinese martial arts are among the most effective ways to improve balance. Research shows that practising Tai Chi for six months can reduce the risk of falling by half.
Around this time, I met my Sifu, Grandmaster Lung Kai-ming, who has always been committed to teaching Kung Fu in the community. Together, we adapted his traditional teaching methods into an easy-to-learn programme that combined Shaolin basic training with Baduanjin Qigong.
The programme lasted eight weeks, and my mum was my first student. I still remember our first training session, practising in front of a fjord in Norway near my grandmother’s cabin. Over a few weeks, her strength, flexibility and balance improved dramatically. It was one of my happiest moments – and a reminder that the body can still adapt and change, even later in life.
What started as a programme for my mum soon became part of my own life. Unlike other forms of exercise I had tried, Kung Fu trained my mind as much as my body. As I continued practising, I realised these benefits weren’t limited to ageing – they addressed many challenges of modern life, from stiffness and poor posture to stress and disconnection from the body.
Balancd grew from that realisation. By combining traditional Chinese martial arts with modern science and a practical understanding of everyday life, my goal became simple: to make these practices accessible, relevant and beneficial for people of all ages.
