Common questions
About our classes
I'm a complete beginner with no experience. Can I join?
Absolutely! Most students start with no prior experience. Classes are taught step by step, with clear guidance and time to practise at your own pace. We have dedicated beginner programs to help you build a strong foundation in a supportive, welcoming environment.
What age groups do you teach?
We primarily teach adults looking to improve strength, balance and focus. Through our community programmes, we also work with seniors and youth, adapting sessions to suit each group’s needs.
What style of Kung Fu do you teach?
We specialize in the traditional Northern Shaolin Style. Our curriculum is designed to teach authentic forms and conditioning, adapted to promote health and wellness in the modern age.
What should I wear to my first class?
For your first trial, wear comfortable clothes you can move freely in. We recommend flat training shoes, Kung Fu shoes, or barefoot-style shoes for optimal practice. Standard athletic shoes are also perfectly fine to start.
How many times per week should I train?
We recommend beginners start with one class per week to build consistency. More dedicated students often train 2-3 times weekly. Regular practice is the key to progress.
Are your classes safe?
Yes. Programmes are thoughtfully structured and led by experienced instructors, with a strong focus on technique, joint health and injury prevention. The Balancd™ Method is informed by exercise science and developed with medical input to support safe, steady progress.
Class Schedule and Trial
Can I try a class before committing?
Yes! We offer single trial classes so you can experience our teaching style and community firsthand. Book your trial through our website or contact us directly via WhatsApp.
Do you offer private lessons?
Yes. We offer one-on-one or small-group private sessions for students seeking accelerated progress, focused correction, or personalized training goals. Contact us for rates and availability.
Our Training App
Do you offer support for practice outside of class?
Yes. We provide guided practice videos, optional app-based progress tracking and curated routines, as well as a training book that explains the foundations of Baduanjin from both traditional and medical perspectives. These tools help reinforce consistency between sessions.
Can I use the app if I'm not a student?
Yes, the app is available to anyone wishing to begin their Kung Fu journey.
General
What are the benefits of training Kung Fu?
Our training holistically improves physical fitness, flexibility, balance, and coordination. It also builds mental focus, discipline, confidence, resilience, and is a powerful tool for stress reduction.
What makes Balancd™ different?
We combine authentic Northern Shaolin training with modern exercise science and clear programme structure. The result is traditional practice made accessible, measurable and relevant for everyday life.
Our Kung Fu Training Book
Do you have a recommended training book?
Yes! The late Master Sifu Lung Kai Ming, Professor Sydney Chung MD, and founder Sara Chung have authored “Shaolin Baduanjin.” It is available for purchase at our classes and online. This book beautifully complements in-class learning with detailed explanations of the foundational principles, philosophy, and techniques of our classic Shaolin Baduanjin program.
Is the book a substitute for taking classes?
No. The book is designed as a supplement to your in-person training. Kung Fu is a physical art best learned through direct instruction and correction. The book reinforces and deepens the understanding you gain on the training floor.
